Here are some details:

Both upper and lower eyebrows are fully poseable, thanks to hinges.

Between the eyes, you can see my custom proximity sensor, that make Johnny Five follow your hand.

The mouth lights up while the head turns around, searching for obstacles.

The neck can move freely, and is poseable; stands still thanks to pins with friction, that are inside the neck cardan joint; the yellow pistons are only decorative.

A cam closes a touch sensor when the head is centered, so Johnny knows where obstacles are.

Ever present laser gun: it moves up and down with a micro motor.

The shoulders can be bent inwards and outwards, and cardan joints transfer the servo movements to the arm levers.

The servo motor makes hands grab objects, and once hands are closed, it lifts the forearms.

This is obtained with a clever lever system.

The fingers are moved by a flex-&-levers system that begins with the servo, placed behind the neck.

The wrist can be turned without influencing hand movement.

At the bottom of the body find place my custom OUTPUT Multiplexer, that makes possible to action five Lego motors and a servo with a single RCX. This beast is tough on batteries!

The RCX is on the back, and stabilizes Johnny with its weight.

The caster wheel is attached to RCX.

These large shock absorbers help the lifter motor to raise up the upper body.

When the torso is down, they are pressed by the weight of the structure and by the motor levers; when motor move the levers to lift the torso, the springs unfold and help the motor, otherwise it could stall and be damaged.

The motor turns a worm gear, that engages a 24z gear; a system of levers move the body.

An early solution to this problem of high momentum on the body joint, caused a 24z gear to shatter up in pieces, because it was connected to the torso in a very bad way...

Version History:

Johnny Five evolution, from Summer 2004 to Christmas 2004

Here you can find some Johnny Five videos: following my hand, raising torso, moving hands.

This model costed me 6 months of hard work.

Maybe I could do it faster, but University drinks my blood!

Check out my smaller Johnny five version!
